In a rebellious effort to free myself of the stronghold Starbucks has on the coffee industry, I have made it a personal effort to visit all of the independent coffee shops I come across. Fortunately, as a San Franciscan, there is plenty of opportunity for this. Don't get me wrong, I love my grande iced skinny double pump no whip mocha as much as the next girl, but there is something so charming about finding a humble mom&pop shop and sippin' on the house favorite while perusing a new, perhaps more socially-conscious crowd of people.
This effort (and a sudden torrential downpour on my way to a bookstore) has recently lead me through the doors of The Summit, a super hipster open space coffee lounge on Valencia and 18th in the Mission District. Conveniently located just three minutes away from my internship office, The Summit has all I could want in a coffee shop and more. A great musical vibe, a simple, yet delicious menu and most importantly on that particular day, shelter from the storm.
The coffee menu consists of macchiatos, cappuccinos, house specials that very daily and one hell of a mocha. As an added bonus, The Summit serves a variety of dishes that leave your taste buds yearning for more. From an amazing hot pork sandwich to some delicious pastries, the prices are reasonable enough. I am learning that affordable and delicious don't usually go hand in hand, but this did make for a nice little splurge on a rainy day.
